Help talented rugby player travel to Georgia

Robert Bornman needs the community’s help to attend an international rugby tour.

Rugby mad are the best words to describe Robert Bornman (18) from Elspark.

The youngster has been playing rugby since Grade One.

He eats, sleeps and breathes rugby, and his passion for the game increases on a daily basis. He cannot even contemplate a life without rugby.

The Hoërskool Elspark learner has now been given the chance of a lifetime.

He is one of about 30 young men who have been chosen to travel to Georgia, to compete in the Travel and Sport Invitational Rugby Week from December 8 to 13.

The invitation to participate in the tour came after he was scouted at a schools rugby tournament in the school holidays at the end of the first term of school.

“I am proud of myself,” Robert said.

“I was surprised when I was chosen and I can’t explain how excited I am.”

Robert told the GCN the week in Georgia will see the boys playing matches against overseas schools and have training with coaches from various clubs.

“We have a chance to be picked by overseas teams,” Robert said.

The young first team flank credits his coaches, Dean Dercsen and Jaco de Jager, at Hoërskool Elspark for helping him achieve the opportunity.

“They have given me a lot of guidance and help,” he said.

However, the tour comes with a price tag – one which is out of the grasp of Robert’s parents, Marietjie and David.

So far they have managed to pay R6 000 towards the trip, but a further R25 000 needs to be raised.

They are appealing to the community and local businesses to help make Robert’s dream come true.

“My goal is to play for South Africa one day,” Robert said.

“I can only imagine what it would feel like to put on that Springbok jersey and walk out onto a field.

“This rugby tour would be an invaluable experience for me.”

Robert also plans to do a rugby refereeing course and when he leaves school he plans to do something in the sporting field.

When he is not on the field he enjoys sleeping, eating and going to the gym.

“Rugby takes up most of his time,” said mom Marietjie.

“He also plays rugby sevens and we support him all the way.

“I try and make sure I attend all his home games, even though he would sometimes rather not have me there as I am loud in my support.”

Robert has four siblings, namely Renier (31), Rudi (34), Riekert (30) and Ronel (27).

“Renier also loves the game of rugby,” Robert said.

Robert also enjoys playing cricket, but doesn’t play it as often as he does rugby.

He would love the opportunity to travel to Georgia and learn new skills to forward his rugby career.
