Top SA paddler attends VLC fund-raising dinner to help youngsters

Local paddlers were thrilled to meet Andy Birkett.

Victoria Lake Canoe Club (VLC) recently hosted a dinner, as a fund-raiser for the less privileged development community paddlers.

The guest speaker was the reigning World Canoe Marathon champion, Andy Birkett.

He also just won the South African Marathon Championships in the K1 and K2 divisions, which took place between June 15 and 17 at Cradle Moon Lakeside Resort in Muldersdrift.

Birkett is now looking forward to representing South Africa in the ICF World Marathon Championships later this year.

At the dinner, he donated the paddles he used, duly signed and personalised, as an auction item for the fund-raising, and he told some humorous stories about his experiences in canoe racing in both local and international situations which kept the crowd chuckling.

Birkett’s interviewer on the evening was Dave Macleod from Gameplan Media, who had inside details and knew which awkward questions to ask to keep the crowd amused.
