Suspects allegedly caught selling liquor without a licence

Primrose police apprehended two suspects on a charge of dealing in liquor without a licence.

The Primrose police continued to crack down on the illegal sale of alcohol in their precinct through several operations within the area.

Two men, aged 31 and 38 years old respectively, were recently arrested during two of these operations on a charge of dealing in liquor without a licence.

The first suspect was arrested while police were on patrol in the Makause informal settlement.

“The officers noticed a group of people drinking alcohol at a structure that looked like a shop,” said Sgt Styles Maome, communications officer for the Primrose police.

“They observed the establishment for a while and noted that community members were buying alcohol.

“They approached the owner and asked for his liquor licence, which he was unable to provide.”

He was arrested and taken to the Primrose Police Station.

The second suspect was arrested by officers on patrol in Heath Street.

“While on patrol police saw people buying liquor from a house,” said Maome.

“They entered, found the owner, introduced themselves as police officers and asked for his liquor licence.

“When he could not provide one he was arrested.”

He was also taken to the Primrose Police Station.

Both men were later released on a warning after paying admission of guilt fines.

“We will continue to hold similar operations within the area and urge the community not to sell liquor without a licence.

“We believe that alcohol abuse can be linked to crimes like domestic violence, rape and assault,” said Maome.
