Children educated about their rights at local school

Heavenly Flowers marked Child Protection Week recently.

In support of Child Protection Week, learners and staff from Heavenly Flowers showed their support for the campaign as it is something close to their hearts.

The children were all educated about their rights.

Section 28 of the Bill of Rights in our Constitution states that “every child has the right to basic nutrition, shelter, health care and social services, as well as the right to be protected from maltreatment, neglect, abuse or degradation”.

“Children are, more often than not, reluctant to come forward to report circumstances of abuse,” said Natasha Viljoen, from Heavenly Flowers.

Police give safety tips to assist the community, so they avoid becoming a statistic

“We believe it is the responsibility of every member of a community to take action against the ongoing abuse of children.

“We need to understand that these incidences do not only affect the victim, but they influence relationships within the community, such as those between children, parents and teachers which, in turn, has a deep and lasting impact on the social development of children.”

To raise awareness in the community to care and protect children from abuse, neglect, exploitation, as well as other forms of violence and ill-treatment, the teachers and learners made posters which were placed all over the school’s premises and at the entrances.

“We urge the community to step forward and speak up against child abuse and be their voices,” said Natasha.
