Local firefighting crew deployed to Boksburg Flea Market fire

Tactical approach by the metro's firefighters helps extinguish what could have been a disastrous structural fire in Boksburg.

Primrose Fire Station personnel and firefighters from Leon Ferreira Fire Station in Boksburg swiftly intervened and showed bravery and a tactical approach to prevent what could have been a disastrous structural fire at the Boksburg Flea Market last Thursday.

The firefighting crews managed to extinguish the well-alight structure where two shops selling various items were engulfed by flames.

“A signal was received at 4.30pm and crews from both fire stations responded promptly to the scene opposite East Rand Mall,” said William Ntladi, district manager media liaison for Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS).

“On arrival, shop owners in the neighbourhood were found battling to contain the flames and salvaging items from their shops.

“Immediately, firefighters initiated an offensive flame knockdown strategy and in no time the fire was contained and extinguished.”

Three fire engines, two major industrial fire pumpers and a brand-new water tanker from Primrose were used during the operation.

Water was sourced from the nearby hydrants and sustainability of supply was maintained.

“Search and rescue was conducted and two patients with minor injuries were accounted for,” said Ntladi.

“Pre-hospital medical treatment was conducted on both, but unfortunately the injured refused transportation to medical facilities.”

The operation was called off at 5.45pm.

According to Ntladi, shops in the neighbourhood were saved even though the contents suffered smoke and water damage.

“The cause of the fire is undetermined and still under investigation,” he said.
