Metro employee based in Germiston arrested for allegedly selling jobs

EMPD members pounce on suspected fraudster.

A metro employee was arrested on Friday following an in-depth and lengthy investigation after complaints were received about his alleged illegal selling of jobs.

Allegations were that he was selling positions advertised at the metro.

The 39-year-old suspect works in the human resources department based in Germiston.

The suspect was arrested at his residence in Benoni at about 9am on Friday.

“He had just resumed his duties on May 2, following a three-month suspension,” said Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago, spokesperson for the EMPD.

“Investigations revealed that an Eastern Cape man, who had visited Ekurhuleni in 2014, had had his identity document and cellphone stolen.

“His stolen identity document was apparently used to open a bank account into which money for selling jobs was paid.

“Investigations by the EMPD Security and Loss Control Unit included travelling to the Eastern Cape where the man whose identity document was used was cleared after submitting solemn statements that he was not involved.”

With the assistance of the Regulation of Interception of Communications Act (RICA), the cellphone number reflected on the job advertisements scamming unsuspecting desperate job-seekers proved to be the suspect’s downfall.

Members of the EMPD Security and Loss Control Unit uncovered 10 cellphones, several MTN, Telkom and Cell C SIM cards and a laptop at his home.

A case of fraud was registered against the suspect at the Boksburg Police Station and he is expected to appear in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court soon.
