Elsburg come out on top in tough match

Elsburg Rugby Club travelled to Delmas for their Kestrel League fixture against Delmas Rugby Club.

The Elsburg Rugby Club travelled to Delmas last Saturday to face Delmas Rugby Club in the third round of the Kestrel League.

Coming off two wins, Elsburg were ready for what promised to be a physical match.

Within the first seven minutes of the first half, Pieter Hanekom ran in a try to secure the first five points of the match for the visiting team.

The try was followed by a successful conversion from Elsburg’s fly half, Rudi Wessels, to bring the club’s lead to seven.

However, the home team refused to give up and soon bounced back, breaking through Elsburg’s defence to score their own try and conversion.

The back-and-forth match continued until the 20th minute when Elsburg’s Morné Badenhorst scored his first try of the match, adding another five points to Elsburg’s score, followed by another successful conversion by Wessels.

Elsburg’s Juan Barnardt followed Badenhorst and scored yet another try for the visiting team.

Delmas pushed back against their visitors and managed to get a penalty against Elsburg, adding another three points to their tally.

This did nothing to sway Elsburg and Badenhorst scored his second try of the match moments before the half-time whistle blew.

This meant Elsburg had a comfortable 31-10 lead heading into half-time.

The break allowed both teams the opportunity to discuss new tactics and prepare for the second half.

In the second half, Marcell Henning scored two tries and Riaan van der Westhuizen one.

The home team were also able to score another two tries.

In the dying minutes of the match Elsburg were awarded a penalty try to bring the full time score to 50-20 in Elsburg’s favour.

Elsburg’s Norman Mare and Badenhorst were named the men of the match.

The club will continue their Kestrel League campaign with a match against Daveyton Rugby Club.
