#IMadeMyMark: St Catherine’s learners share their reasons for voting

Mbali Ngobese and Khaya Ngwenya, matric learners from St Catherine’s School in Parkhill Gardens, will be voting for the first time in May.

Elections are just over a month away and for many youngsters in the city, this will be their first time at the polls.

The GCN visited St Catherine’s School in Parkhill Gardens and spoke to matric learners Mbali Ngobese and Khaya Ngwenya about why they think it is important they vote in the elections.

Mbali, who is head of sport, was first to share her thoughts.

“This is the first time I will be voting and I am very excited,” she said.

“The reason I will be voting is that I believe the youth can make a difference.

“I think this because while reading a newspaper the other day, I read that South Africa has one of the largest youth populations.”

Mbali strongly believes every vote counts.

When it came to political parties campaigning for votes, Mbali said, “There are so many political parties out there, but we are taught to just look at the three major parties,” she said.

“When I vote I believe I will make a difference

“Plus, my mom told me if I don’t vote I can’t complain.”

Khaya, St Catherine’s headboy, then shared his thoughts.

“This will be my first time voting and I feel that being able to vote gives the youth a chance to make a difference,” he said.

“When we were younger I don’t think people took our opinions on what was happening in the country, the good and the bad, or even things we felt we could change, seriously.

“But now the youth, in our numbers, can make a difference.”
