Super league newbies Musa United FC prove tough competition for Germiston

Newly-promoted Musa United FC gave Germiston City FC a tough time in recent Eastern Local Football Association (ELFA) Super League match.

Germiston City Football Club hosted the newly-promoted Musa United Football Club, at the Germiston City Sports Grounds, in their first home match of the Eastern Local Football Association (ELFA) Super League season, last Saturday.

Newbies Musa showed exactly why they were promoted to the Super League in the opening minutes of the match with some good football and quick passing.

Though relentless in their offence and matching the visitors in almost every aspect of the game, Germiston was let down by their inability to find the back of the net and squandered two excellent opportunities.

Musa was the first to put a point on the score board after conceding a corner and cleared the ball down the left of the field, to score on the counter attack after a lacking home side defence left Germiston goalkeeper Comfort Molobela exposed.

Germiston soon responded with a goal of their own, thanks to a well-placed header from Anthony Uzochukwu.

This left the teams tied 1-1 at half-time.

Germiston seemed to learn from the first half’s mistakes and took control for much of the second half, with a standout performance coming from Ketlamorelemang Mokoatedi, who the club’s chairperson Peter Oliver credits as a valuable signing by the team.

However, the home team was once again unable to find the back of the net, despite their continued pressure on the Musa defence.

In the 65th minute, Musa once again conceded a corner and cleared the ball leaving the Germiston defence wandering.

Their second goal was a carbon copy of their first.

Newly-signed Ketlamorelemang Mokoatedi pleased the chairperson of Germiston City FC, Peter Oliver, with his speed and quick thinking on the pitch, last Saturday, when the club faced Musa United Football Club.

Germiston refused to give in and continued to attack.

The home team’s efforts were finally rewarded with a goal by Carlo Buthelezi in the final minutes of the game. The final whistle left the teams tied at 2-2, giving Germiston their first points of the season.

In the reserve teams’ match, the game points were awarded to Germiston as Musa was unable to field a full side.

In addition to coaching the senior team coach Sreten Pavlovic is hard at work with the club’s football academy which is open to players aged between six and 10. Practices are held every Saturday and Sunday morning between 8am and 10am and aim to develop the youngsters’ football skills.
