Top award for local Scout

Kyle Botes a Scout from the First Bedfordview Scout Group was thrilled to receive top award.

First Bedfordview Scout Group Scout Kyle Botes, from Parkhill Gardens, was thrilled when he was recently awarded a Springbok Scout Award.

This is one of the highest awards that a Scout can obtain. Only a select few ever achieve this accolade, with only 18 scouts in Gauteng receiving the award last year.

As part of his award, Kyle organised a troop camp in the Magaliesberg Mountains, undertook a 30km hike, organised and ran a 40-hour community service project at the Salvation Army’s Strathyre Girl’s Home in Bruma and built a bridge from nothing but rope and poles.

He also attended an eight-day survival camp, completed training in advanced navigation and first aid and organised numerous patrol activities.

All of this was done while Kyle was busy completing matric at Alberton High School.

“Kyle’s activities helped make his patrol, Kudu Patrol, one of only two patrols in Gauteng to obtain a Gold Star Award.

“This was a factor in the First Bedfordview Scout Troop being named the best Scout troop in the North Rand District,” explained Andrew Campbell from the First Bedfordview Scout Group.

Kyle will be continuing his Scouting as a member of the Bedfordview Rover Crew.
