Suspect shot after alleged smash-and-grab victim fights back in Primrose

Police attended the scene of a shooting in Primrose on Tuesday.

An alleged smash-and-grabber died after being shot in the head by his victim on Tuesday at 11.33am.

The incident took place at the intersection of Pretoria and Shamrock roads, in Primrose.

“The 37-year-old smash-and-grab victim from Glen Vista had stopped at the red traffic light.

“He had his phone in his hand and his window was open when he was approached by two suspects,” said Capt André de Jager, spokesperson for the Ekurhuleni West Cluster SAPS.

“One of the men grabbed his cellphone and the men ran down Shamrock Road towards the Makause informal settlement.”

The smash-and-grab victim turned left into Shamrock Road and chased after the suspects.

As the men ran towards Makause, the man stopped and got out of his vehicle and fired a warning shot.

“One suspect turned around and allegedly pointed a firearm at the victim, who then shot at the suspect hitting him in the head,” said de Jager.

The critically injured 25-year-old suspect, from Elandsfontein, was transported to Tambo Memorial Hospital in Boksburg under police guard where he later died.

The smash-and-grab victim’s cellphone was recovered and booked in as evidence, along with his firearm, but the second suspect allegedly grabbed the firearm used by the suspects and ran into the informal settlement.

The second suspect is still at large.

“A case of attempted murder has been opened against the smash-and-grab victim for further investigation at Primrose Police Station,” said de Jager.
