Impressive CGA results for local athletics clubs

Local clubs bring the heat in recent CGA track and field event.

The 2019 Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) track and field season is well underway.

Athletes convened at the Germiston Stadium last Saturday for yet another challenging event

Athletes from local clubs such as Germiston Callies Harriers and Diamond Athletics Club, faced clubs from neighbouring towns such as Tsakane Athletics Club, Tembisan Athletics Club, Ulidna Athletics Club and the University of Johannesburg’s track and field team.

Starting off the winning streak for local club Diamond Athletics, Sandile Bukhali scurried past the finish line in third place when he ran in the final boys’ u-18 200m sprint.

Monique Wagner from the University of Johannesburg was the winner of the women’s u-25 shot put with a 13.24m throw.

The club’s Angelo Lete was also placed third in the final of the boys’ u-20 200m race.

Also from Diamond Athletics, Nikiwe Mongwe clinched first place in the women’s u-20 200m race.

In the boys’ u-18 100m hurdles, Kabelo Mamapane of Diamond Athletics made an appearance and secured a silver medal.

Germiston Callies’ Danika Lemmer bagged silver in the women’s u-20 800m race.

Jordan Joordan of Germiston Callies peaked in first place in the men’s u-20 110m hurdles.

Diamond Athletics was represented well in the girls’ u-18 long jump as well with Michaela Adder managing a 5.03m first place landing.

In the men’s u-20 long jump, Sanele Tolbadi grabbed gold after making a 6.68m jump.

In the boys’ u-18 triple jump, Itumeleng Khumalo leaped into third place with a 12.13m jump.

Germiston Callies ensured wins in the field events too, starting off with an amazing gold winning 7.01m jump by Lesedi Moloto in the boys’ u-18 long jump.

Fellow teammate, Gabriel Zeid, followed suit with a 6.91m jump which secured him a silver medal.

Zeid also appeared in the boys’ u-18 triple jump in which he made a first place jump of 14.06m.

Pedro Aaron made his teammates and coach proud when he earned a bronze medal in the men’s u-25 long jump, with a 7.50m jump.

In the men’s u-25 shot put event, Johan du Toit threw his weight in third place with a 12.72m throw.

The club’s Anzale du Toit held the Gemiston Callies name high when her 23.55m throw in the girls’ u-18 discus earned her a gold medal, while Janco de Lange’s 31.70m performance in the boys’ discus earned him a bronze medal.

Senior citizens made an appearance in a number of codes on the day.

Representing Diamond Athletics in the men’s 5km walk, for the 25 years and older, Hendry Smook paced into second place while his wife, Manda Smook, clinched gold in the women’s 25 years and older 5km walk.
