Six motorists arrested for excessive speeding on N12 and N3 highways

Six motorists were clocked at speeds of between 161km/h and 171km/h.

EMPD High-Speed Unit members arrested six motorists for excessive speeding, last Sunday.

On the N12 highway eastbound between the R59 turn-off and the Voortrekker Road exit, five motorists were arrested between 5am and 11am.

Additionally, during their afternoon operation at about 2pm on the N3 highway northbound near Gillooly’s Interchange, one driver was arrested.

On the N12 the five motorists caught were doing speeds of between 171 and 161km/h.

“They were all males, driving in four sedans and an LDV, aged between 25 and 50 years old, citing the usual reasons for being late for an aeroplane or an appointment,” said Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago, spokesperson for the EMPD.

The five arrestees were charged with reckless and negligent driving at the Alberton Police Station, but later released after posting bail of R1 000 each.

They are expected to appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court soon.

The 32-year-old speedster arrested on the N3 was driving a white Mercedes-Benz C-Class and was caught doing 163km/h on this 120km/h stretch of the highway.

He claimed he was late to pick up his brother.

He was locked up at Bedfordview Police Station on a charge of reckless and negligent driving.

He was later released after paying bail of R1 000.

He is expected to appear in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court soon.
