Three women arrested for attempted extortion

Katlehong police arrested three women for alleged attempted extortion.

Three women, aged 28, 30 and 52 years old, respectively, were recently arrested by the Katlehong police for attempted extortion.

The victim, who lives in Silumaview, Katlehong, claimed she began receiving calls in September from two of the women shortly after she received a payout from her husband’s employer, following his death.

“The women claimed to be calling from the company and demanded the victim return a portion of the money she had received as they claimed she had received too much,” explained Capt Mega Ndobe, Katlehong corporate communications official.

After several calls, the victim’s son became suspicious and reported the matter to the police.

“The women were lured to the Katlehong Police Station by the victim who told them she needed them there to finalise the transfer,” said Ndobe.

“During questioning, the women admitted they did not work for the company and they had planned to rob the victim of all the money she received in the payout.

“It was also discovered the plan had allegedly been devised by the victim’s neighbour.”

The women, one from Duduza, one from Phake in Katlehong North, and the other from Silumaview, were held at the Katlehong Police Station pending their appearance in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court.

“We appeal to the communities to be careful when dealing with money.

“We also applaud the victim in this case for not paying the suspects and for reporting the matter to the police, as she could have lost R250 000,” said Ndobe.
