Cyclists put through their paces in annual race
The 35th annual Carnival City Macsteel National Classic took to the streets of Ekurhuleni this weekend.
After months of planning, the annual Carnival City Macsteel National Classic Cycle Race has come and gone.
The 35th annual event, organised by the Rotary Club of Germiston and Germiston Wheelers Cycling Club, was held on Saturday and Sunday and attracted thousands of cyclists and runners.
The Carnival City Macsteel National Classic Cycle Race is recognised as one of the most popular and prestigious events on South Africa’s road cycle racing calendar in Gauteng.
The main objectives of the race are to raise funds for Germiston Rotary’s community projects, the Rotary Foundation and Germiston Wheelers’ charity projects, as well as to develop amateur cycling.

Charities and causes that have previously benefited from the race include Elandsvallei Home for the Aged, Epworth Children’s Village, SAVF Die Anker Tehuis, Germiston SPCA and Amcare, with a number of wheelchairs donated throughout Ekurhuleni.
This ever-popular race followed the same format as in previous years, starting with the mountain bike race held on Saturday, the trail run and the main road cycling race on Sunday.
The road race ran simultaneously with the trail run (which organisers introduced last year and due to popularity decided to continue this year).
Sunday morning offered perfect conditions for cyclists, with dazzling sunshine and blue skies as far as the eye could see.
The entrants set off in groups, from 6am, according to their categories.
The road race included both 110km and 58km distances, and was broken into several categories, namely, elite and u-23 men, junior men, veteran men (VA/VB/VC), elite and veteran women, u-17 and u-15 boys, u-17 and u-15 girls, tandem men, tandem mixed, tandem women, social, para-cyclists and open categories.
Reynard Butler pedalled over the finish line first, in the elite and u-23 men’s race. He was followed by Nolan Hoffman, Ryan Harris, Tyler Day, Jayde Julius, Jason Oosthuizen, Travis Barrett, Jan Montshioa, Gustav Basson and Tristan Cuthbert, to round out the top ten positions.
Kim le Court was placed first in the elite and veteran women’s division.

In the mountain bike race, Shaun-Nick Bester was placed first in the 60km open men’s division. He was followed by Bradley Potgieter and Andries Nigrini, while Marrissa van der Linde, Faye Darby and Annemarie Jacobsz, rounded out the 60km open women’s podium.
Germiston Wheelers Cycle Club thanked all of this year’s participants, supporters, sponsors, service providers, club members and organising committee members, for making the weekend a success.
