Update: Further testing and alleged attempted cable theft delay power restoration

Metro engineers and technicians continue to work to restore power following an explosion and building collapse at the Elsburg Substation.

Several Germiston suburbs are still without power this afternoon following an explosion and building collapse at the Elsburg Substation in Ostend Road on Tuesday.

The affected areas, which include, but are not limited to, Delville, Collin Wade, the industrial area of Germiston South, Parkhill Gardens, Tedstoneville, industrial areas fed from Enterprise, and parts of Hazeldene, Germiston South, Elsburg and the Germiston CBD.

It was reported earlier today (Thursday) that a team of metro technicians had began switching power back on slowly from 6.30am this morning.

“The power is being turned on gradually so as not to overload the new equipment and to allow the DC batteries on site time to charge.

“They simply cannot switch everything on at the same time,” Ward 39 councillor Alta de Beer said this morning.

De Beer added that the latest reports from site claim that restoration was delayed once again as further testing was been carried out.

“Testing is in progress to establish network integrity as there was an attempted cable theft while the power was off,” said de Beer.

The new estimated restoration time is 5pm today (Thursday).

Further details will be released when they become available.
