Hard-hitting action at two-day tournament

Tebbutt’s Mixed Martial Arts Academy host action-packed All Styles Championship.

After the success of the Destiny NMA ISKA tournament in Cape Town, which saw six Tebbutt’s Mixed Martial Arts Academy members compete and bring home 22 medals, the academy hosted a two-day tournament, last Friday and Saturday.

The All Styles Championship was held at the Primrose Wrestling Club, in Oak Avenue.

The action kicked-off on Friday with participants taking part in kata, including traditional, weapons, music and unison, while, on Saturday, the event focused on fighting, tile breaking and high-kick.

“The turnout at the tournament was excellent and more than we expected,” said Kancho Alex Tebbutt.

“We had 154 participants in total over the two days.”

The competitors came from dojos across the country, including but not limited to, KwaZulu-Natal, the Free State, Centurion, Johannesburg, Vereeniging, Vaal, Brakpan, Boksburg, Kempton Park and Benoni.

“We started with four-year-olds and went right through to veterans,” explained Tebbutt.

In the more than 180 items, over the two days, 198 first place, 171 second place and 168 third place medals and trophies were awarded.

In addition to this, six Champion of Champions titles were awarded.

“We are extremely happy and grateful that the event was such a huge success.

“Our Friday evening, which was all katas and such, nearly doubled in size from last year,” said Tebbutt happily.

“A special thank you to Shabnum Mia for the briyani she provided for lunch on Saturday.”

The academy, which is looking forward to next year’s event, finally thanked all the students and clubs who participated.
