Matrics reunite after 50 years

Hoërskool Goudrif 1968 classmates come together to celebrate their 50-year reunion.

Many years ago the class of 1968 bid farewell to Hoërskool Goudrif.

They scattered across the country, to places like KwaZulu-Natal and the Cape, as well as to the rest of the world, to build lives for themselves and start families of their own.

Fifty years later they returned to the school to look back on fond memories and create some new ones.

The group’s reunion was held in the Goudrif lapa, last Saturday, and it was a festive and fun-filled affair.

“This is a very special occasion,” said reunion organiser Hans Potgieter.

“People travelled from all over, including myself, who travelled from the Southern Cape to be here.

The group last met in 1998 for their 30th reunion.

“We held our last reunion at a hotel close to the airport.

“But this year the school offered us the use of its facilities, which was wonderful because it not only saved on costs but allowed us a chance to visit our alma mater,” he said.

Though guests were disappointed that a representative from the school could not join the festivities, they were grateful that they had willingly opened their doors to them.

When asked what he thinks of the school and how it has changed over the years Hans said, “The school looks great.

“Of course there are minor problems here and there but that is with any school.

“I look forward to taking a walk through the premises.”

Hans credited technology with helping to bring everyone together.

“Social media is an amazing thing,” he said with a laugh.

“Though I did have to send out a few SMSs as there are a few ‘tannies’ who don’t have WhatsApp.”

The class of 1968 not only enjoyed the opportunity to catch-up and find out what had been happening in each others’ lives but also to share a delicious meal and lots of champagne.
