Local company spearheads tree planting campaign

Grinding Media SA gets on the grind of planting trees.

September not only marks the beginning of spring, but it also signifies the start of Arbor Month.

Arbor Month celebrates the importance of trees and the ways in which they better our lives.

To honour the month, Grinding Media SA (GMSA), in partnership with Food and Trees for Africa (FTFA), donated 2 300 trees last Thursday to homes and schools in Katlehong, Thokoza and Vosloorus.

This national tree planting programme also contributes to the development of greenbelts.

Trees donated by Grinding Media South Africa, in partnership with Food and Trees for Africa, include fruit trees (peach, plum and orange), as well as indigenous trees ideal for shade.

“Such a partnership provides a perfect opportunity for GMSA to participate in tree planting and volunteering in communities in which we operate.

“We are delighted for the opportunity and are committed to partnering with credible organisations such as FTFA to uplift these communities,” said Ray Abrahams, acting CEO of GMSA.

Mannei Mamba, an environmental specialist at Grinding Media SA, gets assistance from learners from Nageng Primary School in Vosloorus as they kick off their tree planting campaign at the school.

The partnership saw fruit and indigenous shade trees planted in these areas thus furthering the mission of growing urban food forests in the area. The Wadeville-based company is focused on having a positive impact on the communities surrounding their business and in which they operate.

Grinding Media SA staff, Food and Trees for Africa (FTFA) staff and community educators trained by FTFA honour Arbor Month with a tree planting campaign in Katlehong, Thokoza and Vosloorus.

It reached over 1 000 homes and 10 schools with the tree donations.

Prior to the handover of the donations, FTFA conducted meetings with stakeholders where trees for homes would be rolled out.

Through this process community members were identified and trained as community educators.

The training of 40 community educators in the local community created temporary employment opportunities and ensured the roll-out of trees to the 1 000 households was amicable.

Through the Trees for All Programme, the 10 beneficiary schools each received about 30 trees.
