Residents descend on Germiston, demanding serviced stands

Residents from Tembisa protested outside the Germiston Civic Centre.

Fed-up residents from Winnie Mandela in Tembisa descended on the Germiston Civic Centre last Tuesday demanding the serviced stands they were allegedly promised by the metro.

The residents claim that they identified land suitable for serviced stands in Tembisa, last year, and were promised by the office of the MMC for Human Settlements, Lesiba Mpya, that they would be given stands.

However, this has not happened and the residents feel they are being disrespected and are not being treated as citizens.

In other grievances with the metro, they told the GCN the community is not consulted and they are not asked to be involved when it comes to community projects in the area and this annoys them.

They also claim there are never any public meetings held in Ward 89 to help involve the community.

“We are prepared to vote for any party in the upcoming elections who will help us,” said one of the community leaders, Steven Maluleka.

“If we wait around for RDP housing, by the time we get a house we will be old.

“The metro makes lots of promises but doesn’t give us anything.”

Maluleka added the residents have even sent a letter to President Cyril Ramaphosa explaining the situation to him.

They told the GCN they have contacted the metro many times and hear nothing from the municipality.

“Once we receive the serviced stands, we will name the area Motsepe View,” Maluleka said.

The residents handed a memorandum over to the metro and have given the metro seven days in which to respond.

The GCN contacted the metro for comment on the issue but at the time of going to press no response had been received.
