Turning tables with DJ D-Ross

Meet DJ D-Ross, new on the music scene and already making waves.

At a sports day event at Maroba Secondary School in Ga-Rakgoatha in Limpopo, 16-year-old Dineo Rosina Sandi fell in love with the art of DJing.

Now known as DJ D-Ross, the 24-year-old Elandsfontein resident is making waves as a sought-after female DJ.

“When I approached Jackson Nkuna and Potego Kekana at the sports day event and asked them if they could teach me the art, they were friendly and open to teaching me all they knew about becoming a disk-jockey,” said DJ D-Ross.

“They started me off with a DJing app and they gave me a lot of homework.”

A few years later DJ D-Ross was making a name for herself, clearing cheques from a number of small events.

In her pursuit of becoming the next DJ Zinhle or Miss Cosmo, DJ D-Ross enrolled at Boston Media House and completed the DJ 101 course in 2017.

“Furthering your knowledge in anything you are interested in benefits you in the long run.

“You learn new ways to approach hurdles that may come and ways to avoid jokesters in your industry,” said DJ D-Ross.

The course, entailing theory, practical and marketing modules, propelled DJ D-Ross into entrepreneurship.

“I love being my own boss.

“Although working alone for this long has made me sceptical of seeking out a manager or a booking agent.

“Which is bad because I anticipate a busy career and I will need help, but I guess I will have to build a trustworthy relationship with whomever I employ,” she said.

As a young woman trying to make it in a male-dominated industry, DJ D-Ross recalls experiencing harsh treatment from promoters.

“Promoters have dodged my calls and skipped payments in the past.

“Some have even tried pursuing me as a love interest.

“A lot of us women in this industry aren’t shown the same respect as men and we are not paid within the same tax bracket at times,”

DJ D-Ross reckons it’s important for women to be assertive in any line of business and command respect.

She is currently working on her first single to be released later this year.

Along with the preparations to release her first single, she is putting together her One Lady Show which she hopes will help her solidify her presence in the local club scene and in the music industry.
