Police warn community about unsettling trend

The Primrose police urge community members to not open false cases as this pulls resources away from other cases.

The Primrose police have recently seen an increase in the number of rape cases being reported in Primrose’s informal settlements.

“What is most concerning is we have registered a number of cases of rapes and assaults between ex-lovers.

“We have received reports that in some instances there is a mutual agreement that the pair will meet at a local tavern and will agree to spend the night together, for a certain fee.

“When the man does not pay, the woman will call the police and lay a charge of rape,” explained Sgt Styles Maome, communications officer for the Primrose police.

In other instances, Maome explained that community members will open a case as a threat to the accused.

“They demand that the accused pay a certain amount to them to withdraw the case or face jail,” he said.

He encouraged the community to think before they register cases.

“Residents cannot use the police to intimidate each other for payments.

“We continue to warn the community that opening a false case can lead to prosecution on charges of defeating the ends of justice or perjury,” said Maome.
