SA Survivor winner to inspire women in Women’s Month

Round off Women’s Month with a women’s-only event.

Entertainer, entrepreneur, motivational speaker and winner of the 2010 Survivor South Africa, Gigi, ventures to Carnival City to inspire women to keep their dreams alive this Women’s Month.

Western Cape-raised Perlé van Schalkwyk, better known as Gigi, has led a colourful life, from performing on stage and her appearances on television, to working with an anti-drug group to educate South African youngsters on the dangers of drugs.

Vivacious and bold, Gigi is a captivating motivational speaker with a passion for inspiring women to embrace their femininity and strive to achieve their best lives.

The event, hosted at Applause@Bru’s, will start at 8pm on August 30, and carries an age restriction of 18.

“We are excited to welcome Gigi to our stage for what promises to be an entertaining and inspiring women’s-only event.

“This is a great way to celebrate what it is to be a woman in the modern age with your friends and like-minded women,” said Carnival City’s marketing manager Michelle Smith.

Gigi completed a bachelor of drama at the University of Stellenbosch and during her time there did the first full frontal nude scene in the production Equus.

This was the first time nudity had ever been seen in Stellenbosch at the HB Thom.

After university she worked in several productions for CAPAB and then moved to Pretoria to work for PACT.

Here Gigi did high school and primary school productions, touring from Johannesburg to Secunda, doing prescribed school works with fellow new actors.

After PACT she worked with an anti-drug group led by Steve Hamilton, a reformed drug addict, doing drug plays at schools.

They toured Durban, Cape Town and Johannesburg helping young children and teenagers to deal with the growing drug problem in the country.

Once she had fulfilled her calling there, she danced in Spellbound with American magicians for Sun International.

Thereafter, Gigi concentrated purely on dancing.

She was a member of a formation team doing dance shows at the old Caesars Palace in Braamfontein.

Gigi enjoyed dancing in a team but felt there was something more out there for her, and so she started doing erotic dance shows at clubs and venues across Johannesburg and its surrounding areas.

In 2000 she ventured back to the stage with a play by Alexander Strachen entitled Hartebees and has since also done a number of television ads.

In 2010 she became a household name when she won the TV reality series Survivor South Africa and since then she has done plenty of glamour work and special appearances.
