Carnival City rises against hunger

Mandela Day saw thousands of meals being packed to help feed needy children.

To commemorate Mandela Day, last Wednesday, Carnival City rallied its employees and volunteers from local businesses and government to Rise Against Hunger.

The initiative, in collaboration with Rise Against Hunger (previously Stop Hunger Now), saw hundreds of volunteers invest 67 minutes of their time on packaging lines to pack meal parcels for needy children.

Amongst the volunteers was Miss Teen Gauteng 2017, Kaitlin de Jager.

A grand total of 110 376 meals were packed on the day.

Volunteers from Carnival City, Sun International’s head office, and other local businesses spent Mandela Day packing meals for underprivileged people at Carnival City as part of the Rise Against Hunger campaign.

Each parcel contains 216 meal bags, which in turn contain six meals each.

The contents are carefully planned to provide for the nutritional needs of children, including rice, soya, soup mix and a vitamin sachet containing 23 essential vitamins and minerals.

“Mandela Day, this year, marked the centenary of the late former president, Nelson Mandela’s birth.

“In the spirit of Mandela’s immense generosity and love for children, we were honoured to host the 2018 Rise Against Hunger food packing drive on what would have been his 100th birthday.

“Alleviating hunger is something that is close to our hearts and it was indeed heartening to see so many volunteers line up to lend a hand to pack food for the needy in our community,” said Annemie Turk, general manager of Carnival City.
