Karate students learn about life together

Full contact karate students enjoyed a special holiday programme recently.

More than 50 karate students recently came together for the African Full Contact Karate Winter Holiday Programme.

The camp was held at the Kharimbi campsite in Heidelberg and dojos from as far as Limpopo attended the annual event.

Local students from the Kyokushin Karate Club, based in Katlehong, also attended the event.

The main objective of the camp was to give karate students an opportunity to learn life skills and leadership skills.

The programme was divided into capacity building and physical training.

A spelling bee competition, which was won by Abram-Hlophe Dojo, under the leadership of sensei Mkhobiseni Manyathi and Bongani Mkwanazi, was held with great success.

The facilitators also spoke to the karate students about drug use by the youth in the community (and the after effects), as well as the abuse of women and children.

Sensei Thulane Sibisi leader of the Kyokushin Karate Club and African Full Contact Karate Organisation (AFCKO) president said everyone must advocate for a drug-free society and he wants to see the youth staying away from nyaope.

The programme was extra special this year as the participants celebrated sensei Mbali Msomi’s (a senior instructor at Kyokushin Karate Club’s Mpontsheng Dojo) win at the fifth International Karate Kobudo Federation (IKKF) World Karate Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan.

She was named a world champion in the women’s open division.

The holiday programme was supported by the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, the Ekurhuleni Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture and the National Lotteries Commission.
