New hygienic age for Dukhatole

Community members from Dukhatole have come up with a new clean-up campaign with aspirations to give hope to locals.

#NewHope, a new clean-up campaign created by the Dukhatole youth to inspire change in the community one clean-up at a time, launched their first community clean-up on Wednesday morning.

“When enquiring at a local clinic about the substantial number of sickly community members, we were informed that most people who visited the clinic were in ill health because of failing to keep up with basic hygiene routines and because of the filthy surroundings they are subjected to,” said Tshepo Mosia, project co-ordinator for #NewHope.

“After realising that a number of community members were falling sick due to the dirt-encrusted state of the neighbourhood, we thought it was time we did something about it to minimise further health risks by encouraging our people to lead healthier and hygienic lives.”

The corner of Selanie Street and Rabbi Avenue was the first corner cleaned on Wednesday and will be turned into a Friday night youth debating station where the youth will gather to discuss community development plans and ways to better the lives of each member.

Other corners will be turned into fruit and veg corner mini-markets, while others become convenient stores to bring the culture of entrepreneurship into the community to tackle the issue of unemployment.

“It is important that we as members of Dukhatole do this, especially the youth, because it’s not the mayor of Germiston who lives in these streets, it is not the premier of Gauteng or the president of our country, it’s us, and it’s our responsibility to keep our homes and streets clean,” said Mosia.

“We plan on carrying out small clean-ups ahead of the big clean-up campaign we will be hosting on June 2 as we usher in Youth Month.

“For this campaign we’ll need a larger number of volunteers as we head out to clean the whole of Dukhatole and lastly reveal future plans of opening a park in our area.

“However, to carry out this plan we’ll need assistance from local businesses and the municipality in the form of sponsorships and donations of wheelie bins, gloves, brooms and plastic bags to ensure that precautions and safety measures during the clean-up are met,” he added.

Volunteers and donors can contact Mosia on 060 579 7072.
