The Elsburg Eagles Cricket Club has clinched the Easterns Cricket League’s Promotion League title after beating United Cricket Club, from Brakpan, in the final.
The final match of the season was played at the Eagles’ home ground, the Elsburg Eagles Main Oval in Dinwiddie, last Sunday.
Though the sun was shining, the pitch was damp at the beginning of the match.
After winning the toss, the visitors elected to bat first despite the damp conditions.
United was able to rack up 108 runs, all out, in their 50 allotted overs with many runs coming from some hard hits in the opening overs.
The match’s top bowler was JD Schultz with five wickets for 26 runs in ten overs.
The Eagles then took to the crease, and per their predictions, the pitch had dried and offered favourable conditions for the batsmen which the club took full advantage of.
The home side knocked up a total of 109 runs for seven wickets, which gave the team a four-wicket win.
The day’s top batsmen were Naeem Khalid with 40 runs, not out and Garreth Hann with 29 runs, not out.
It was the decision of the Easterns Cricket League that this victory secured the Eagles the top position in the league at the end of the 2017/2018 season.
The club was thrilled with the result which added to its already impressive results in the league with a win in the Executive League campaign for the second year in a row and placing fourth in the Saturday Second League.
