Spend family time sprucing up your home with an easy how-to guide

With the seasons changing this may be the perfect opportunity to spruce up your home.

There is no denying that the public holidays in April are the perfect time to take time out to spend with your loved ones.

With the seasons changing this may be the perfect opportunity to spruce up your home to get winter ready, so how about making it exciting by involving the whole family in the process this year.

Dulux has put together a couple of DIY ideas on how you and family can make your home fabulous on a budget:

• Find inspiration

Draw inspiration from Pinterest, décor publications, as well as the Dulux Instagram account. The first step would be to gather clippings, pins and pictures that inspire you and your family together. Get the kids to create mood boards of how they envision the makeover, this should be a fun exercise and will allow them to explore their creative side.

• Keep it tidy

Get rid of all the clutter in your home in preparation for the exciting makeover day. While the kids may not be able to move the bigger furniture pieces it would be ideal to have them declutter their rooms and get rid of all the toys, books and clothes they may no longer need, and donate it to a charity of your choice.

What plans do you have for the holidays?

• Making a statement

Keep costs to a minimum by not painting the entire house or room, but choosing a feature wall that will be the centre of attraction, and glamming it up by applying a bold statement colour, or painting vertical lines in different colours. To help you select a colour for your wall try using the Dulux Visualizer App so you can immediately see which colours compliment your furniture.

Dulux advises against children painting, so while the adults paint the walls, the children could create art pieces using oil pastels and water paints and these can be framed and used in one of the rooms.

• Revive old furniture

There are some pieces that hold sentimental value in a home even though they might be dated. They might not necessarily compliment your modern furniture because it could be a chair you inherited from your grandparents. But rather than throwing it out, revive it. Revive the wood by using the Dulux Woodgard to give it a fresh look or choose a bright colour to give it a colourful makeover that will make it standout in your home. You could even replace the knobs of an old chest of drawer to make it look trendy.

Have fun bonding with your family with these ideas.
