Elsburg SAPS Victim Support in need of volunteers

The Elsburg SAPS Victim Support calls on the community to join their mission to provide help to victims of crimes.

The Elsburg SAPS Victim Support Centre, which is based at the Elsburg police station, is in the process of expanding and is in need of volunteers.

The centre provides free trauma counselling for victims of rape, hijacking, armed robbery, domestic violence and other grievances.

“Due to the daily service and support we provide to the community the need has arisen to get more volunteers on board,” said Wilma Berry, one of the volunteers at the centre.

The role of the volunteer is to be there as support for the victim of crime, by defusing situations, debriefing, and providing emotional and practical support.

“We assist victims as much as possible with referrals to the correct organisations to assist any individual should their need lie outside the scope of the Victim Support Centre or short-term trauma counselling,” said Berry.

All volunteers will receive upfront and on-going training in all areas of debriefing, emotional and practical support, including advising victims of their rights and informing them of the processes that will follow.

Volunteers need their own transport and a valid driver’s licence.
