Germiston muso sets his sights on the top

Singer and songwriter Sibusiso Nyathi talks about his future in soul music.

Sibusiso Nyathi, better known by his stage name Soul Vision, is a singer and songwriter from Georgetown in Germiston who is breaking and entering into the South African music industry with his soul music.

Sibusiso started his music career in 2009 by performing cover songs.

“I was always more focused on my school career than my singing talent and even though I was aware that I knew how to sing I just never thought of music as a career.

“It was just fun for me to perform well-known songs at school and for close friends,” said Sibusiso

That all changed in 2015 when he met rap duo Trallavelle (made up of twins Kabelo and Keletso Moraba) and through their friendship, he was encouraged to write and perform his own music and he sought to get into the soul music industry as he felt it was a dying genre in this generation.

“A lot of the youngsters going into music lately are either rappers or R&B artists and no one is focusing on soul music,” he said.

His artistic bond with Trallavelle had a great influence on the release of his first single entitled Game of Thrones, which was released in 2015.

During that time Sibusiso was afforded the opportunity to work with Don and Mukisi, producers from Rap Lyf Records, the record label which signed Trallavelle in 2016.

Sibusiso recorded two songs with the Rap Lyf producers entitled Uthando Lwakho and Tonic Down.

“Rap Lyf producers played the tracks for Ambitious Entertainment, and last year September Ambitious wanted to sign me as an artist under their label, but I declined their offer and signed with Colourless Emotions instead, a company owned by Trallavelle,” he explained.

“I would rather be surrounded by people I know.”

Being scouted by one of South Africa’s leading record labels was a great confidence booster for Sibusiso, who stopped doubting his musical capabilities.

According to Sibusiso following the release of Tonic Down in September 2017, he received great feedback from Germiston residents with some stating the song showed growth in his lyrical content.

Sibusiso said he hopes to inspire people with his music just as artists such as PartyNextDoor, Roy Woods, The Weeknd, Trallavelle and Lauryn Hill have inspired him to believe more in himself and his artistry than the negativity around him.

“I am putting the final touches on my EP (extended play) which I am scheduled to release in March,” said Sibusiso.
