Tackling boxing’s male stereotype

The East Rand Veterans Boxing Association is pushing for more community involvement in boxing.

The East Rand Veterans Boxing Association (ERVBA) will be hosting their monthly meeting on March 8, and they’re calling on the community to join them on this auspicious evening.

Boxing has always been a sport associated with men, with little to no involvement from women, but the ERVBA is looking to change this narrative. This is why they’ve invited Shereen Hunter, winner of the most promising promoter of the year award at the 2018 Boxing South Africa Awards, to be the guest speaker at their upcoming meeting.

Jaap van Nieuwenhuizen, chairperson of the ERVBA, said, “We are trying to get more women and children from our community involved in boxing.

“Throughout the year we will be inviting guest speakers to our meetings with the hope of creating excitement in our community regarding boxing, and to ensure that when we host tournaments, people come to show their support.”

The meeting will take place at the Primrose Bowling Club starting at 7pm.
