Be on alert in wet weather says DEMS
Make sure you are alert and aware at all times in rainy weather.
Following the consistent downpours experienced across the metro, Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) advises residents, industrial and business communities to be extra cautious of flooding especially those in flood-prone and low-lying areas.
The ground is becoming saturated and subsequently flooding is highly likely.
DEMS, in collaboration with South African Weather Services (SAWS), cautions residents and drivers to be on high alert throughout the rainy season.
People should avoid crossing low-lying bridges and swollen streams where water is above ankle level.
Parents are advised to accompany their children if they have to walk past trenches, cross rivers, go near water tunnels or culverts for safety reasons.
Open water streams spell danger in rainy weather as water levels are high.
Drowning cases are one of the challenges emergency services experience during the summer season.
Parents need to be extra cautious, alert and knowledgeable of the whereabouts of their children.

Heavy rain may result in the flooding of rivers, low-lying bridges, open trenches, furrows and canals.
The flooding can also cause damage downstream of these areas.
Listen out for weather warnings and obey the instructions of disaster management officials.
DEMS is on high alert for any eventualities that might arise as a result of heavy rainfall and flooding.
Communities affected by flooding or any life-threatening emergencies are advised to call the emergency call centre for swift intervention.
Take note of the following:
• In case of emergencies call the life-threatening emergency number 011 458 0911, 112 from a cellphone or the national emergency number 10177.
• Ensure that you have the emergency call centre contact numbers readily and clearly displayed for everyone to know and to use.
• Numbers should be saved and easy to access on your telephone or cellular phone.
• Speak clearly on the phone when reporting an emergency.
• Provide the operators with all the necessary details required.
• Do not end the conversation until all questions are answered.
