The EMPD Anti-Cable Theft and Meter Tampering Unit responded to a complaint from the metro’s finance and energy departments, last Thursday, about illegal electric connections in a dilapidated building in the Germiston CBD.
The dilapidated building in Meyer Street, between Odendaal and Knox streets, to which the municipality had cut the electricity supply, was found to have occupants connecting electricity illegally from a mini-substation.
Three businesses – a bar, a supermarket and a hair salon – were found to be using the illegally connected power.
The metro police escorted electricians and technicians to the building where the connection was removed and the occupants given a stern warning to vacate the building.
Investigations and raids of such buildings in the Germiston CBD will continue.
