Explosives found in car in Knights

Acting on their suspicions led police to make arrests, confiscate explosives.

Nine people were arrested on a charge of possession of explosives, last Sunday, by members of the Germiston SAPS.

“Police members noticed a silver Hyundai Tucson on Main Reef Road in Knights with lots of occupants which looked suspicious to them.

“The members called for back-up while following the car,” said Capt André de Jager, Ekurhuleni West Cluster SAPS spokesman.

As back-up arrived they ordered the driver of the vehicle to stop and asked the occupants to get out of the car.

“Nine people climbed out of the vehicle and the members searched them.

“After they were searched the police focused on the car,” said de Jager.

Inside the car the members found six round rolls of explosives and cord.

The occupants could not give a proper explanation as to where they had obtained the explosives and what they were going to do with them.

All nine suspects, aged between 24 and 34, were arrested and detained at the Germiston Police Station.

The standby officer from Explosives Unit was called to take possession of the explosives.

The suspects will be charged and appear in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court soon.
