Police nab alleged cable thief

Police apprehend man on a charge of possession of stolen goods in Primrose.

The Primrose police nabbed a 54-year-old man in the early hours of the morning, recently.

The man will face a charge of possession of stolen goods after he was found acting suspiciously at the Eskom cable manhole on the corner of Carnation and Rietfontein roads, in Primrose.

“The officers were patrolling Rietfontein Road when they heard a noise at the Eskom cable manhole.

“They went to have a look and saw three men busy working at the manhole.

“Officers asked the men to produce their appointment cards (agreement letters) as there have recently been a number of complaints regarding cable theft at this particular place,” said Sgt Styles Maome, communications officer for the Primrose SAPS.

When the men were asked to bring whatever they had in their possession out of the manhole, they handed over a 25L bucket containing a chain block, a chisel, a hacksaw blade and 15 pieces of copper cable to the value of R10 00.

“They did not have any proof of permission to work there,” said Maome.

“While the police were taking the first suspect to the police vehicle, the other two ran away.

“We will hunt for the two who ran away and bring them to book.”

The arrested suspect was detained at the Primrose Police Station and is due to appear in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court soon.
