Germiston CBD operation yields counterfeit goods worth R120 000

A joint by-law enforcement operation targeted trouble spots in the Germiston CBD.

The Germiston CBD was a hive of activity,  on Tuesday when a by-law enforcement operation took place.

The operation was conducted by Germiston EMPD precinct officers and Germiston SAPS members, as well as the EMPD Equestrian Unit, the EMPD K9 Unit, the EMPD Intervention Unit and traffic wardens and counterfeit goods inspectors from a law firm.

The special operation, which targeted trouble spots in the CBD where by-laws are continually flaunted by some hawkers, commenced at 9am and was completed by 1pm.

Counterfeit goods, which included dresses, footwear, T-shirts, caps, cellphone batteries, shoe polish, sanitary towels, backpacks and tea valued at over R120 000 were confiscated.

Over and above, a huge quantity of perishables such as fruit and vegetables were also seized.

A man who had already been given more than five warnings for illegally plying his tyre-selling trade on the pavement had his stock of 49 tyres and 17 rims confiscated.

Plantation Road at the intersections of Railway Street, High Road and Rand Road yielded most of the culprits who ply their trade on the pavements obstructing pedestrians who are then compelled to walk in the busy road endangering their lives.

A total of 21 summonses and three warnings were issued for a variety of offences, including the repair of vehicles on the pavements, illegal parking and operating without a permit.
