Luso keeps cup dream alive

Luso Africa had an action-packed week of football.

The Super League Cup was in the minds of football teams throughout the region on Saturday, and Luso Africa Football Club was no different.

The first and reserve teams took on Old Bens in away matches at Old Bens home grounds in Benoni.

Luso Africa are the current cup-holders and the first team came out looking for a win in the first round of the competition.

They found what they were looking for, winning with the convincing score of 3-1.

Old Bens are a team on a high at the moment with a good run of form going into the game.

Luso, however, looked the sharpest and as if they wanted the win more.

Two early goals by Igor Ivanov and Chagan Kruger gave the away team a much-deserved 2-0 lead before Old Bens got one back to make it 2-1 at the break.

The second half saw Luso continue pressing and playing some great team football before Marco Cabeleira scored the third, ensuring a good win for Luso Africa.

Luso’s reserve team went down 1-0 to their Old Bens counterparts.

After losing in the final last year, Luso were hoping to go one better and win the cup this year.

Luso started relatively well and created two good chances early on which they failed to convert.

This came back to bite them after Old Bens scored with their first real chance.

The second half saw the Luso team pressing harder for an equaliser but again they could not take their chances.

And that ultimately cost them the game and saw them kicked out of the cup.

The Super League teams will be back at Old Bens this weekend in the league.

In the SAFA Ekurhuleni Women’s League, Luso won 3-1 against Home Sweepers in Nigel.

The women knew a win was important at the start as they are approaching the halfway mark in the league.

And an early goal from Nicola Hills was just reward for their dominance.

They did, however, fail to convert several more chances and Home Sweepers got an equaliser with the last kick of the first half.

After making a couple of changes at half-time, the fresh legs were just too much for the Home Sweepers team and Natasha De Caires and Deme Kapatos made sure the girls took all the points.

It was a very good team performance.

The women currently have a 100 per cent record in the league which they hope to win and gain entry into the women’s Sasol League.

The women will be up against second-placed Phomolong Ladies at Luso this Saturday.

Luso’s SAB team took on Alberton Kargo at Alberton on Wednesday evening.

Looking to keep the pressure on the top teams, they knew a win was important.

They managed to come away with a very good 2-1 win and remain in third place, six points off the top.

The u-11 boys played against Super Sport at Luso, and the youngsters under the guidance of Taiwo and Kehinde Akiode pulled off a very good 2-1 win.
