A 22-year-old man from the Makause informal settlement was recently arrested for statutory rape.
The arrest was carried out by the Primrose police with the help of the Germiston Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS).
“The 13-year-old victim told police that she had been with friends when they were approached by the accused.
“He allegedly dragged the young girl to a nearby shack, where he raped her,” explained Sgt Styles Maome, communications officer for the Primrose police.
The man was taken to the Primrose Police Station, where he was formally charged.
He will appear in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court soon.
“We want to remind the community that sex with a minor is a serious offence, even if it is consensual.
“Only 16-year-olds and older can consent to have sex,” said Maome.
