Soup kitchen helps those who need it most

Soup kitchen in Tedstoneville is in need of donations.

Over 50 mouths are fed every week, in Tedstoneville, due to the selfless acts of Naomi Masilo.

Naomi runs a soup kitchen every Monday morning.

“I have been running the soup kitchen for the past three years,” said Naomi.

“We sometimes don’t realise how many people rely on soup kitchens, among other things, and it is for that reason that I have never skipped a week of preparing food for people who come every Monday.”

Naomi said her background is one of the reasons she decided to start the soup kitchen.

“I didn’t have an easy life growing up and understand the situation they are in,” she said.

“I know how it feels to come home and find that there is nothing to eat.

“It is frustrating, which is why I decided to help where I can.”

Although Naomi runs the project primarily from her own pocket, she also gets help from her pastor.

“I get help from Pastor Steven du Plessis from New Beginnings Church,” said Naomi.

“The pastor donates to the project every Saturday; he donates various items, for example, soft drinks, yoghurt and mielie-meal among other things.

“I am truly grateful for his assistance, as it goes a long way.”

Naomi also told the GCN that she feels content when everybody who comes to the soup kitchen gets fed.

“I don’t have a lot; I also get help from my husband and we share whatever we have with the different families,” she said.

“It fills my heart with joy when everybody goes back home fed.

“I always make sure that we cook and prepare decent meals, I would never give them anything that I wouldn’t eat.”

The number of mouths to feed is increasing and Naomi fears that she might one day not have enough.

“Valerie du Toit has also just come on board to help but we are in need of sponsorship,” said Naomi.

“We appeal to community members and companies to help us with food and blankets, especially since it is winter.

“But above all we need food; we would really appreciate the assistance.

“We hope people will open their hearts and give generously.”
