Training heating up in preparation for Worlds

Paddlers across Gauteng are training hard to qualify for the World Marathon Canoe Championships.

The International Canoe Federation (ICF) has identified South Africa for the 2017 World Marathon Canoe Championships.

The event will take place in Pietermaritzburg in the first week of September.

Paddlers throughout SA are in training hoping to qualify for the event, and races organised by local clubs are geared towards preparation and training for the championships.

The Gauteng Marathon Selection Trials will be held at ERK (Ekurhuleni Kayak Club) at Homestead Dam Benoni on July 22 and 23, where the Gauteng team will be selected to represent the province at the upcoming South African Marathon Championships taking place in August.

Paddlers from all areas of Gauteng, including the Victoria Lake Canoe Club (VLC), will compete in this prestigious event, hoping to make the Gauteng or SA team and to qualify for Worlds.

The venue for the SA Marathon event will be a test run for the World Marathon Canoe Championships in Pietermaritzburg.

The World Masters Championships will take place at the same time as the World Marathon Canoe Championships.

This event is for age groups above the competitive age – from 35 years upwards. The masters may race without qualification up to the age of 70 and the categories include: sub-veteran, veteran, sub-masters, masters, sub-grand masters and grand masters, as well as the great-grand masters.
