Discovering thoroughbreds through the ages

Discover a hidden historical gem at the Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association of South Africa’s museum.

Nestled in Gosforth Park, Germiston, is one of the corner stones of the horseracing world, the Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association of South Africa (TBA).

In 1977, the members of the association came together to build what would become one of the racing world’s most notable, dedicated thoroughbred sales complexes.

To this day, TBA promotes and encourages the breeding and improvement of thoroughbred horses and is committed to their care.

In 2009, to remember the complex’s rich and diverse history and its contributions to the racing world, a museum was created within the complex walls, which is a treasure trove of vintage displays, catalogues, books, horseracing artefacts, plus a cinema and a vast library with comfortable seating.

Visitors can expect to find a veritable visual journey as they are taken back in South African horseracing history, with each decade distinguished by an iconic female figure.

Princess Diana commemorates horseracing in the eighties, alongside the music and personalities of the time, providing an interesting perspective for visitors.

Photographic displays include images of famous and well-known thoroughbred horse breeders and horses that made history.

The museum cinema is a highlight.

Guests will be able to indulge in beautifully produced video productions of South Africa’s early racing legends, with original film footage of horses such as Hawaii, Colorado King and Sea Cottage, with video titles updated according to the horse sales seasons, so you can look forward to something new from time to time.

Spend as much time as you like engrossing yourself in the history of the sport.

For more information on the museum or to book tours, call Pauline Smith on 011 323 5700 or send an email to pauline@tba.co.za. Alternatively, visit the TBA website at www.tba.co.za.
