Update: Security to be beefed up at construction site near Primrose High

Rand Water has highlighted Primrose High School’s security issues to their contractor and security will be increased.

After the theft of over 80 computers from Primrose High School during the Easter school holidays (GCN, April 28), the school raised its concerns about the security at the Rand Water contracted construction site bordering the school.

Elkan Butler, deputy principal of the school, told the GCN that two men had entered through the construction site before letting another four, with a vehicle, into the school premises.

The school also said they often have petty theft with people walking through the construction area onto school grounds and they wanted a solution from Rand Water and the contracted construction company for the lax security.

Justice Mohale, media relations manager from Rand Water said, “Rand Water officials met with the contractor to highlight the security concerns in the area.

“The contractor has committed to complete the reinforcing of the fence this week.”

He added that a team of dedicated security officers will be assigned to guard the site at all times until a permanent fence has been erected.

The contractor has also committed to replace the stolen items with the use of the company’s insurance policy and a list of all stolen items was sourced from the school.

“The remaining work near the school will be completed before the end of May,” Mohale said.

“Rand Water has also been assured by the contractor that the project along Cemetery Road will be completed by July and they have security officers patrolling the construction area along that road.

“Additional security officers will be assigned to patrol the site to ensure visibility in the area until the project is completed.”

He added that the reinstatement of the roads is done with the involvement of the metro’s engineers and Rand Water and the contractor constantly inspect the reinstatement to ensure it is done to the required specifications and completed work is signed off.
