Athletes make coach proud

Germiston Callies Harriers received great representation from local athletes.

Germiston Callies Harriers athletes showcased their talents at the SA Schools Athletics Championships held in Durban from March 29 to April 2.

The local athletes Pedro Aaron, Simonè van der Nest and Tanya Ehrke secured podium positions and proved that they are forces to be reckoned with.

Their results were:

  • Aaron won gold in the boy’s u-19 long jump.
  • Van der Nest won gold for the girl’s u-19 100m and 200m sprint events.
  • Ehrke came second in the girl’s u-19 100m hurdles.

“These results are good – they really made themselves, their supporters and Germiston proud,” said their coach, Stephanè Kotzè.

“I am happy with the results they managed to produce at such a big event.”

In other news, all three athletes, together with Kayla Gilbert, competed at Central Gauteng Athletics Track and Field Commission’s 2017 CGA Senior Championships held at the University of Johannesburg Athletics Stadium, recently.

Their results were:

  • Aaron placed second in the senior men’s long jump.
  • Gilbert placed second in the senior women’s long jump.
  • Van der Nest won gold in the women’s u-19 100m sprint.
  • Ehrke attained a joint first place in the women’s u-19 100m hurdles.

“It is really humbling when athletes give the sport their all,” said Kotzè.

“Aaron, for example, was competing against some of the top senior athletes but he managed to come second with a distance of 7.96m.”

Kotzè said Aaron will compete at the National Track and Field Senior Championships from April 20 to 22, in Potchefstroom.
