Juicy Tidbits – For the love of pandas

Today is International Panda Day, so spare a thought for theses amazing creatures who capture our hearts and imagination.

Today, March 16, is International Panda Day.

Though this day seems too good to be true for a panda fan, such as myself, it really is International Panda Day, who knew?

Giant Pandas are big fluffy balls of black and white fur, known to young and old across the world.

These beautiful creatures, that are extremely shy and elusive in the wild, have a special place in many people’s hearts and are known for their extraordinary appetites that give them the ability to consume massive amounts of bamboo daily.

Despite any rumours you may have heard to the contrary about pandas not being bears is false, they are part of the Ursidae family, which places them solidly in the bear kingdom, though interestingly, they’re also part of the Carnivora Order, which means they share a lot in common with dogs, like all bears.

  • A brief history of Panda Day:

Panda Day grew out of the recognised need to help protect these beautiful bears.

The day is dedicated to spreading awareness about the panda and spreading the word that deforestation is leading to the destruction of their habitats, and has placed them on the endangered species list.

Housed in zoos and conservatories all over the world, this species requires conservation efforts to even have a chance at recovering from this current state, and while examples of the species exist in the wild, efforts must be made to protect their habitat and even control the predators in their area.

Pandas are sensitive creatures and disruptions to their environment can lead to issues with them reproducing.

Little reproductive success has been had in captivity and though there has been a positive change in recent years, still, they are not prone to giving birth very often, and that means any loss to their number is potentially tragic.

  •  How to celebrate Panda Day:

Firstly consider learning more about these creatures and maybe getting involved or donating to conservation efforts.

While on a fun note, wear panda-themed clothing or, if you are brave, a panda outfit to create your own awareness about the panda’s plight.
