Dagga found abandoned in classroom

The Elsburg SAPS and other organisations want schools to be drug-free zones.

Members of the Elsburg SAPS Crime Prevention Unit, sector managers, the communications officer, Victim Empowerment Centre and EMPD traffic wardens conducted a school search operation at Graceland Secondary School, on Wednesday.

“The search took place in an effort to address the increasing drug problem in schools in the Elsburg SAPS policing precinct,” said Const Daphney Phooko, communications officer for the Elsburg police.

“It is alleged that the learners are bringing dagga to school and are smoking it there while others are dealing dagga on the school premises.

“This behaviour is taking place during breaks and after school.”

During a search of the Grade 10 classes, 16g of dagga was found abandoned by its owner.

The dagga along with a number of bracelets, worn by learners, were confiscated.

The children had been told they were not allowed to wear these bracelets during school hours.

The aim of the search was to start eliminating the opportunity of drug use and the selling of drugs to schoolchildren.

“Frequent school searches will be conducted in order to ensure our schools are drug-free zones,” said Phooko.
