While on a recent routine patrol in Malvern East, members of the Benoni K9 Unit received a tip-off about two men with ivory in their possession.
Officers travelled to the Stanhope Road address given by the informant, where they found two men, aged 31 and 36 years old.
“Officers searched the men and found a number of ivory pieces in their possession,” explained Sgt Styles Maome, communications officer for the Primrose police.
The men were arrested and the ivory was seized.
“The suspects were first detained at the Cleveland Police Station before being transferred to the Primrose Police Station, where they were formally charged,” said Maome.
The pair have since appeared in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court, on a charge of possession of ivory, where their case was postponed for plea and trial.
