Eagles bowl over the competition

Elsburg Eagles Cricket Club continued their Easterns Cricket League campaign this weekend.

Two of the Elsburg Eagles Cricket Club’s weekend fixtures were called off this weekend.

The club’s Saturday Second League match was called off due to a wet pitch, resulting in a draw, while the Presidents League match, scheduled for Sunday, was called off when their opponents, the Bakerton Cricket Club were unable to field a team.

This meant that the match’s points were awarded to the Eagles, placing them back at the top of the log.

Sunday’s Promotion League match against Katlehong Cricket Club, however, went ahead as planned at the Scaw Main Oval in Dinwiddie.

The Eagles won the toss and elected to bat first, in the hope of beating the encroaching storm.

The club only managed to bat their way to a 113 score, in their 50 overs, on a bowler friendly pitch, before they were all out.

The match’s top batsmen were Martiens Grobler, with 31 runs not out and Trent Murray with 20 runs.

It was then the Katlehong batsmen’s turn at the crease, and despite their best efforts, were only able to make 45 runs before they were all bowled out.

This meant the Eagles walked away with a 68 run victory.

The club’s top bowlers for the day were Henk Black, with four wickets for only 31 runs in eight overs, and Billy Millar with three wickets for only one run in four overs.

This weekend the club will play in what could be their last matches of the season.

This first of which will be in the Saturday Second League, where they will face Eden Park Cricket Club at the Scaw Main Oval in Dinwiddie, while on Sunday the club will face Midrand Cricket Club in the Promotion League, in an away match, and the Thokoza Cricket Club in the Presidents League at the Scaw Main Oval in Dinwiddie.

Further matches will be announced once the outcome of the weekend’s matches is known.
