More allegations surround Clr Mashala

New allegations surrounding ANC councillor cause for concern for DA.

After allegations about ANC councillor Clr Stenias Mashala surfaced in the January council meeting, held at the Germiston civic centre, more allegations have come to light.

At the council meeting it was revealed that the councillor had been arrested for assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm, by the Putfontein police, after allegedly assaulting a woman.

It has now been claimed, by the DA, that Mashala was allegedly involved in a fatal vehicle collision in which a young man died.

It has been reported that Mashala was driving while allegedly under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident.

“These allegations compound our concern regarding Clr Mashala’s fitness to hold office and while we understand the due process of law needs to run its course, we feel the gravity of the charges should prompt the speaker of council, Patricia Kumalo, to speed up the investigation,” said DA councillor Ashley Hoods, DA shadow MMC for community safety.

The chief whip of council, Jongizizwe Dlabathi, said at the last council meeting that the matter would be handed to the ethics committee for investigation.

“At the next council meeting the committee will present its findings and suggestions for the way forward.

“In the interim we will not suspend the councillor as we feel this is jumping the gun on the investigation’s findings,” he said.

The DA further stated that the outcome of the investigation would bring justice to the victims.
