It was the first day of ‘big school’ for grade ones across the city. Deidre van der Merwe (left) and Thalitha Swanepoel began their school careers in Suzel Spies’ class at Laerskool Oosterkruin on Wednesday morning; and the pair were all smiles.
There was excitement, laughter and a few tears as Laerskool Oosterkruin welcomed their new Grade Ones, on Wednesday.
The school’s principal Chris Kruger and all of his staff were in high spirits, welcoming children and parents to the school.
“We are ready to start 2017 and excited to welcome all of our new Grade Ones to the school,” said Kruger.
After an opening assembly, parents were given the opportunity to walk their Grade One children to their new classrooms, where they met their teachers: either Suzel Spies, Adél Cromhout, Carina Borstlap or Susan Greyling.
Spies welcomed her children to the Goggas/Bug Class, so named because like the ladybug – which only has a lifespan of a year – she has just a year to teach and mould the young minds in her care, before they leave her for the next grade.
Moms, dads and grandparents helped their little ones choose a seat, before snapping a couple of last minute photos.
Many children were eager to get the year started, unpacking their stationery and books as soon as they sat down.
Others were more hesitant and a little overwhelmed by the new surroundings.
The day was a great success, with children and teachers settling in for the new year.
