Matrics plan their futures

The city was abuzz with excitement as matrics received their results.

Another school year past and another matric class eagerly awaited their National Senior Certificate examination results.

The long wait came to an end for the ‘Class of 2016’ on Thursday, with learners flocking to their respective high schools to receive their certificates.

For the most part Germiston was full of smiles, as the youngsters compared results and chatted about their plans for the future.

The top performing school in the city was Hoërskool Goudrif, which celebrated a 100 per cent pass rate.

Principal Marius Mills told the GCN he was pleased and grateful that they’d received such good results.

Goudrif’s ‘Class of 2016’ was made up of 104 matric learners, who achieved 21 distinctions between them.

Mills said he was extremely pleased with the fact that 67.3 per cent of the learners attained university exemption, 30.7 per cent achieved diploma passes and 1.9 per cent got higher certificate passes.

The school’s top achievers were: Suzette Nel with four distinctions in English, Afrikaans, life orientation and life sciences; Zunika van Niekerk with three distinctions in Afrikaans, English and business studies; plus Charnelle Kruger with three distinctions in maths literacy, life orientation and tourism.

“I’m proud of the learners and very happy with the results,” Mills said.

The next school in line was Primrose High School, with a pass rate of 97.6 per cent.

André Grobler, principal of the school, was thrilled with the results.

A total of 170 matrics sat their final examinations at the school, earning 64 distinctions between them.

“I’m very proud of both the students and the teachers for all their hard work throughout the year.

“As I always say: ‘Work hard and God will do the rest’,” said Grobler.

The school’s top achieving students were: Liezel Sephesu, with five distinctions in mathematics, life orientations, computer applications technology, life sciences and physical sciences; Puseletso Methe, with three distinctions in Afrikaans, tourism and life orientation; Nokuthula Khwasha, with three distinctions in mathematics, life science and life orientation – and Bibi Ahmed-Ismail, with three distinctions in Afrikaans, mathematics literacy and life orientation.

“We wish our learners all the best for the future,” Grobler concluded proudly.

In third position was Afrikaanse Hoërskool Germiston, with a 96 per cent pass rate.

“We’re satisfied with our pass rate and our learners performed much better than I expected,” said the school’s principal, Retha du Toit.

“Good luck to this year’s matriculants – if you work hard throughout the year, the results will prove it.”

There were 114 matriculants and the school recorded 29 distinctions in total, with John-Samuel Nortje as the top achieving learner.

Nortje obtained six distinctions in English, life orientation, business studies, life sciences, mathematics and physical sciences.

Germiston High School learners were among those, who were thrilled to receive their results.

The school had a pass rate of 95.75 per cent and 52 distinctions.

The deputy principal of the school, Renée Goosen, was pleased with all their 166 matriculants.

“We’re very happy with the pass rate and although some of the learners struggled during the year, they pulled through,” she said.

“The matriculants performed better than expected – they overcame many obstacles and challenges.

“The staff also did tremendous work helping the learners; we have hard working staff members.”

The school’s top achievers were Nhlurile Hlatshwayo and Mbalenhle Ndhlovu, who produced 10 distinctions between them.

Hlatshwayo was overwhelmed with her six distinctions and said: “I got distinctions for life orientation, Afrikaans, life sciences, mathematics, accounting and physical sciences.”

Ndhlovu obtained four distinctions in accounting, business studies, economics and life orientation.

Goosen added that the learners put in a lot of effort.

“Most of the learners had to push themselves to reach their potential; and they did,” she said.

“We always want to and work towards improving our pass rate every year.”

Institute Status Acres Secondary School attained a 94 per cent pass rate.

The school had 48 matrics; and between them they achieved 24 distinctions, 21 bachelors’ degree passes, 21 diploma passes and three higher certificate passes.

Deputy principal Titien Kyamba said: “The school is very happy with the results, even though our pass rate dropped by three per cent.

“We look forward to improving our results this year.”

The principal of Dawnview High School, Moeketsie Kolokoto, is satisfied with his school’s results.

The school attained an 89 per cent pass rate.

“Overall, I’m happy as there’s been an improvement compared to 2015,” he said.

Dawnview had 123 matric pupils, who between them attained 15 distinctions.

The results included 29 bachelors’ degree passes; 55 diploma passes and 24 higher certificate passes.

The top three learners were: Adaeze Ikwuemesim (with a 71 per cent pass rate); Neo Mphahlele (with a distinction in life orientation) and Nonjabulo Mkhonza (with a distinction in life orientation).

“I attribute the results to the hard work displayed by the teachers, as it wasn’t easy for them.

“I’m also extremely pleased that all our student leaders passed their exams with bachelors’ passes,” Kolokoto said.

He added that in 2017, they were going to work hard and improve the results.

“To do this however, we need the full co-operation of the learners,” he said.

Vryburger High School achieved an 86.3 per cent pass rate and was happy with the performance of their 149 learners, who between them earned 22 distinctions.

Khumoitsile Raphadu, an HOD at the school, said: “We’re very proud as a school today, as we issue the 2016 class of matrics their certificates.

“We appreciate the effort made by both the teachers and learners.”

The school’s top achievers were: Mandisa Nhlapo with six distinctions for English, mathematics, life orientation, business studies, physical sciences and life sciences; Tshegofatso Makgato with two distinctions for business studies and life orientation; Emmanuel Kumalo with two distinctions for mathematics and life orientation – and Fanisa Matelakengisa, who achieved six distinctions.

The school wishes the students all of the best for the road ahead.

Sizwe Secondary School was happy with its 86 per cent pass rate.

There were 98 learners who sat the exams; and between them they attained four distinctions.

The school achieved 22 bachelors’ degree passes, 39 diploma passes and 22 higher certificate passes.

Principal Mandla Cele said: “I’m happy with the results and hope to improve this year.”

The GCN endeavoured to contact all the schools, however not all were available for results and comment.
